The Social Progress Index (SPI) is the first comprehensive model for measuring social progress that is independent of and complementary to traditional economic indicators. The SPI measures the extent to which countries meet the social and environmental needs of their citizens. In its design, the SPI is guided by four basic principles:

• It only considers social and environmental indicators.

• Outcome indicators, not effort indicators

• Indicators relevant to the context

• Actionable indicators for public policy
