Report: What Motivates Young People to Vote?

Narrativas para fortalecer la participación democrática juvenil

What truly motivates young people to participate in democracy? Is providing information enough to encourage voting, or are there more effective narratives that inspire civic action?

This study presents the findings of an experimental research project conducted by Fundación Corona and Movilizatorio as part of the Alliance for Democracy and the Democracy Narrative Alliance (DNA). The research aimed to identify which messages are most effective in strengthening Colombian youths' knowledge, motivation, and willingness to participate in elections for the Municipal Youth Councils.

Using an experimental design grounded in behavioral science, the study examines the impact of three different narrative approaches—information, future-oriented messaging, and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)—on voting intention, perceived civic impact, and understanding of the democratic process.

What will you find in this report?

  • Evidence on the main barriers that prevent young people from participating in democratic processes.

  • An analysis of how different types of messages influence knowledge and willingness to vote.

  • Insights into young people's relationship with democracy, public institutions, and political participation.

  • Recommendations for designing more effective voter mobilization campaigns that resonate with young people's realities.

  • Lessons that can inform future elections and citizen participation processes in Colombia and beyond.

Among its key findings, the study shows that narratives linking civic participation to future aspirations, opportunities, and the ability to influence change are more effective than purely informational messages in encouraging youth democratic participation.
